For many of us, the way to love those that we have no affinity for, those whose actions we cannot understand, those who offend or harm us and those who disrespect and hate us, is a mystery, a frustration, a yawning gap that we cannot bridge. This book can help us to build the bridges we need in order to genuinely love those others that seem unlovable to us.
This book seeks to do two things:
1. For those who know and accept that they should love their neighbors as themselves but have become frustrated and discouraged by their inability to do so, this book seeks to convince them that such love is absolutely possible, and to show them pathways that lead to love.
2. For those who are not sure about whether trying to love their neighbors as themselves is necessary, this book seeks to explain in detail and hopefully convince them of the necessity, as Christians, of obeying this commandment.
There is no better way to relate to God than by love: to recognize God as the fatherly sovereign of our hearts and minds, enthroned by our joyful recognition of God’s eternal goodness, benevolent almighty power, precious promises of mercy and justice, and the gift of abundant, fruitful living in close association with Godself. God commands us to love and that is the good news, the open door, the true and shining way to bountiful, blooming and flourishing life eternal.
There is no better way to interact with other persons than with the desire to do good to them: to offer them true affection, to forgive them when they err, to aid them when they are in need, and when they are strong to work shoulder to shoulder with them for the glory of God. There is no better way to recognize the true nature of a person than as our eternal sibling, a beloved child of the living God, a temple of the Spirit of God, just as we are. God commands us to love one another and that is the good news, the beckoning light, the steadfast and everlasting way to become full to overflowing with joy, righteousness and peace.
